Gabriel Donleavy

Canterbury, LLB London, PhD Glasgow, FCPA, FAIA(Acc), FIMgt, FRSA, JP(Qual) is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Western Sydney. Professor Gabriel DonleavyHis current research involves the processes of professional judgment. Over the last 30 years, Gabriel has accumulated a wealth of experience as a consultant, teacher, researcher and coach in top schools and business centres in the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. His commercial career has included main board positions with quoted firms in the United Kingdom and a partnership in a city commodity broking house. His academic career has included a term as Head of the School of Commerce and Marketing at CQUniversity; Deanships of Business at Victoria University and the University of Macau and a period as the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Victoria University and as the Chief Executive Officer of a health care institute in England. He has taught and researched in Australia, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Hungary and Vietnam. Gabriel specialises in international and union negotiations; training scheme design and implementation for middle and senior managers; action learning and research; change management; and academic validation and accreditation.

In addition, he has provided financial analysis services to various businesses and written successful proposals to banks and venture capital providers. Gabriel has assisted organisations to implement the legislative requirements of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This Act is administered by the American Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which sets deadlines for compliance and publishes rules on requirements. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act states that all business records, including electronic records and electronic messages, must be saved for "not less than five years." The consequences for non-compliance are fines, imprisonment, or both. He has developed many strategies in business planning, financial analysis and international business negotiations and has designed codes of ethics. His extensive expertise in the area of forensic accounting has led him to serve as an expert witness in criminal trials. Gabriel is also a published author of six books as well as over 100 business articles in various journals and other publications.

Research Interests

Cash flow statements, academic accounting management structures, the origins of fair value accounting, criticisms of stakeholder theory, accounting measurement and alternatives to subjective estimation, evolving a general theory of accounting, third sector management. To date, I have published 40 refereed articles, many papers and 6 books.
