Expertise and research interests

His research, executive education and advisory activities are in the field of strategic entrepreneurship and innovation, with focus on challenges associated with digital disruption, industry reconfiguration and their implications for firm strategy. His work has been featured in various outlets such as the MIT Sloan Management Review and the Harvard Business Review case collection, and he is author of the book Management of Convergence in Innovation (2008). Being a regular speaker and trainer, he has worked with companies such as ABB, Art Basel, Bang & Olufsen, Danone, Deutsche Telekom, Johnson&Johnson, KPMG, Nokia and UBS, and advised organizations such as the European Parliament or the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. He is actively involved in start-up and corporate venturing activities, and is recipient of the research award by the Nokia–AlcatelLucent Foundation. His article “Strategic choices in converging industries” (2013) was selected “Top Strategy Article” by the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Educational background

Fredrik Hacklin holds a PhD in management from ETH Zurich, an MSc in computer science from KTH Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm, and a BSc (Vordiplom) in computer science and physics from RWTH Aachen. He obtained his “Venia Legendi” habilitation from ETH Zurich in Management, and has completed the GloColl Faculty Program at Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Academy of Management, and the Strategic Management Society.

Fredrik Hacklin is Professor and Head of Department at the ZHAW School of Management and Law. He further serves as Member of the Board of Directors at Evli Bank Plc and as Associated Faculty (Privatdozent) at ETH Zurich. Previously, he has been a strategy consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton (today Strategy&, PwC) and a Fellow at Harvard University, and Professor at Vlerick Business School.

Fredrik Hacklin is Professor of Entrepreneurship at Vlerick Business School and Managing Director of the Corporate Innovation Lab. He further serves on the faculty (PD) of D-​MTEC at ETH Zurich. Previously, he was a Fellow at Harvard University and a strategy consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton (today Strategy&, PwC). He has held visiting positions at Stanford University, Imperial College Business School, ESMT Berlin, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Keio University and Aalto University.

His research, teaching and advisory activities are in the field of strategic entrepreneurship and innovation, with particular focus on challenges associated with digital disruption, industry reconfiguration and their implications for firm strategy. His results have appeared in various outlets and he is author of the book Management of Convergence in Innovation (2008). He is recipient of the annual research award by the Nokia–AlcatelLucent Foundation for Communications Research, for his work on ICT industry convergence. His article “Strategic choices in converging industries” (MIT Sloan Management Review, 2013) was selected “Top Strategy Article” by the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Fredrik holds a PhD in management from ETH Zurich, an MSc in computer science from KTH Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm, and a BSc in computer science and physics from RWTH Aachen.
