Mendoza College of Business

Eric Albert Zimmer, S.J., joins Mendoza as an associate professional specialist after teaching for us as an adjunct for the past two years. He teaches business communication courses including Negotiation and Advanced Writing for Accounting Professionals for the Mendoza College of Business. He comes to Notre Dame from the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations, where he served as attaché and negotiator on human rights issues in the General Assembly. He brings extensive teaching experience from Georgetown University’s Communication, Culture and Technology Program, the University of Washington, and Creighton University School of Medicine where he founded and was first Director of the Leadership Development Program. He has broad international experience, from teaching in Kathmandu, Nepal to studying technology in India and France, to working for the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education, in which he handled English language higher education globally. He lectured in Santiago, Chile as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at La Universidad Alberto Hurtado. His academic research focuses on the adoption of innovation in non-profit organizations, on fundraising practices of nonprofits, on the Digital Divide and on the Matthew Effect. He has published in political communication, health communication and policy, information and communication technology, including in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Communication Trends, and the American Journal of Public Health. Eric has wide ranging interests in addition to his academic work. He created, and still administers, a global email service for the Society of Jesus. He has been involved in fundraising efforts at Creighton University and at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland. Pastorally, his work includes having been State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus D.C. State Council for five years, Chaplain in the United States Air Force Reserve for seven years, a weekend associate at parishes for two decades and a frequent giver of Ignatian preached retreats. He serves as a Trustee of the National Office of Post-Abortion Reconciliation and Healing and has previously served as a Trustee at Loyola University New Orleans, Saint Ignatius High School, and the Rudolph P. and Florence Nadbath Charitable Trust. A native of Detroit and an Eagle Scout, he supports these and other character-building experiences. Fr. Zimmer holds a Ph.D. in Communication Theory from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business, and an M.Div. and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. He also earned a master’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Minnesota. His bachelor’s degree, in philosophy, is from Loyola University in New Orleans. In 2003, he completed a solo transcontinental bicycle ride as a fundraiser for Project Rachel. He began working at age 11 to pay his tuition, and has kept busy ever since.
