Elsa Angelini

Elsa Angelini received a B.Sc. degree in 1996 from the Ecole Centrale de Nantes (Nantes, France) with a major in automation and signal processing. She joined the Biomedical Engineering Department of Columbia University in 1997, and received a M.Sc. degree in 1998 and a Ph.D in 2003. She performed her doctoral research in the Biomedical Imaging Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Laine and in collaboration with Dr. Homma and Dr. Holmes. She stayed at Columbia University as a post doctoral fellow until March 2004.

She joined the Department of Signal and Image Processing, at Telecom ParisTech, Institut Mines Telecom in Paris in 2004 where she is an associate professor with specific focus on image processing for biomedical imaging applications. In 2010, she spent a 5 months sabbatical as a Visiting Scientist in the Biomedical Imaging Group of the CSIRO-Australian e-Health Research Center, Brisbane, Australia. She passed her Habilitation a Diriger des Recherches (HDR) in 2011.

She is since 2012 at Columbia University, as an Associate Research Scientist and co-director of the Heffner Biomedical Imaging Laboratory. She has dual affiliation with Telecom ParisTech, for the co-supervision of PhD students and the responsibility of the M2 BioImaging specialty of the BME-Paris Master Program. She is also an adjunct faculty for the Biomechanics Laboratory of Arts et Métiers ParisTech since 2014, in charge of teaching several courses.

Services & Memberships

Elsa Angelini has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering (2008-2012), and as a member of the steering committee of the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (2010-2014, chair in 2014).

She is or has been an elected member of several boards (IEEE EMBS AdCom, ParisTech AdCom, CNRS INS2I Scientific Advisory Board).

She has co-authored over 140 publications, abstracts excluded, in the field of bio and medical image analysis, of which over 31 have appeared in peer-reviewed international journals, and of which 1 received a best paper award.

She was in 2010 one of the co-founder of the International Biomedical Engineering Master Program BME-Paris, co-managed by ParisTech and the medical University Paris Descartes. She is the co-chair of the M2 Bioimaging specialty track.

Elsa Angelini has been on the program committee of MICCAI 07-08-11-12, and on the organizing committee of the conferences MICCAI 2008 and IEEE-ISBI 2008. She was the general chair of the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI'15) in 2015 in Brooklyn NY.

She is since 2011 part of the Program Committee of the Conference SPIE Medical Imaging - Image Processing, and co-chair of the conference since 2015.

She is member since 2007 and chair since 2013 of the IEEE Technical Committee on Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing (BIIP). She is an elected member of the Technical Committee on Bio Imaging and Signal Processing (BISP) of the IEEE SP Society.

Her research interests include:

• Image and signal processing, wavelet theory, computer vision, computer graphics and scientific visualization.
• Clinical applications related to multi-dimensional imaging modalities for denoising, enhancement and segmentation.
• Assessment of image quality for different clinical protocols and diagnostic applications.
• Quantification of anatomical structures and physiological functions and validation with clinical studies.
• Anatomical modeling.
