Doug Clark has practiced as an intellectual property lawyer in Hong Kong and China since 1993. Since 2016, he has been teaching the LLM Hong Kong Intellectual Property course.

Doug is currently Global Head of Dispute Resolution with the intellectual property firm Rouse. He is a solicitor advocate of the High Court of Hong Kong. Doug’s main practice is intellectual property litigation and arbitration, particularly involving patents. From 2011 to 2019 Doug practiced as an intellectual property barrister in Hong Kong were he regularly appeared in the higher courts. Prior to 2011, he was managing partner of International Law Firm Lovells Shanghai office and also head of the firm’s Mainland China Intellectual Property Practice between 2003 and 2010.

Doug has published 4 legal texts:

– Patent Litigation in China (OUP, 2nd ed., 2015) – Intellectual Property Rights in Hong Kong (LexisNexis), 2019 (also as a looseleaf) – Intellectual Property Law in China, (Wolters Kluwer), 2021 (co-author) – Civil Litigation in Hong Kong (6th edition, 2021).

He has also published a three volume history of British and American extraterritoriality in China and Japan, Gunboat Justice (Earnshaw Books, 2015).

Doug holds a LLB (Hons) and BA (Asian Studies) from the Australian National University, a PCLL from the City University of Hong Kong and attended post-graduate studies at Fudan University in Shanghai. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.
