Dirk Noël is a linguist who studied English, Dutch and general linguistics at the University of Antwerp and holds a PhD in English linguistics from Ghent University. Prior to coming to HKU in 2006, he held teaching and research posts at the universities of Antwerp, Ghent and Leuven. His past research has included work on clausal complement constructions involving cognition, utterance and perception verbs, verb valency in a contrastive (English/French/Dutch) perspective, bilingual lexicography, textual coherence, and – the longest ago – the language of radio news bulletins. More recently, for a dozen or so years now, he has been engaged in theoretical and descriptive work in the field of diachronic construction grammar.
