Biography

Damian Grimshaw is Professor of Employment studies at Manchester Business School and Director of EWERC (European Work and Employment Research Centre). His research on pay and employment in the UK and comparisons with other European countries and the United States has been funded by several international bodies (eg. OECD, ILO, European Commission, Russell Sage Foundation). Recent publications inclue: an edited book with Routledge Minimum Wages, Pay Equity and Comparative Industrial Relations (2013, Routledge); an article in Cambridge Journal of Economics ''The end of the UK''s liberal collectivist social model? The implications of the coalition government''s policies during the austerity crisis'' (with Jill Rubery, 2012); and a book chapter ''Women''s changing job structure in Europe: Patterns of job concentration, low pay and welfare state employment'' (with Hugo Figueiredo, 2012), in E. Macias-Fernaqndez and J. Hurley (eds.) Transformations of the Employment Structure in the EU and US, Routledge.

Damian Grimshaw teaches two undergraduate courses - Globalisation and Employment (second year) and Globalisation and National Employment Systems (final year) - and two postgraduate courses - Multinationals and Comparative Employment Systems and Employment Policy and Practice. He is curently rewriting a textbook with colleagues (first published in 2003 as ''The Organisation of Employment: an International Perspective'', Palgrave.

King’s Business School

Damian Grimshaw is Professor of Employment Studies and Assistant Dean for Research Impact. He was previously Director of the Research Department at a major United Nations agency, the International Labour Organisation, for two years (Geneva, 2018-19).

Prior to that he was Professor at the University of Manchester, Head of the HR and Employment Relations and Law group and Director of the European Work and Employment Research Centre.

His published work covers international comparisons of low-wage labour markets, outsourcing and HRM, technology and the future of work, precarious work, collective bargaining and gender inequality. His research outlook crosses multiple disciplines, including labour market analysis, comparative employment relations, feminist economics, sociology of work and management.

Damian’s research has been funded by the British Academy, ESRC, European Commission, International Labour Organisation, Leverhulme Trust, Low Pay Commission, OECD and Russell Sage Foundation among others. His work has a strong impact in UK, European and international poliy arenas and is published in leading academic journals.
