CY Tang is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Hong Kong and leads the Membrane-based Environmental & Sustainable Technology (MemBEST) group. He received his B.Eng. (First Class Honors, 2000) and M.Eng. (2001) degrees from Nanyang Technological University and his Ph.D. degree (2007) from Stanford University.
Professor Tang's research focuses on membrane and filter technology, environmental materials, desalination, water reuse, resource recovery, and water-energy nexus. He has over 300 refereed publications, with a total citation of >23,000 and H-index of 87 (Web of Science). He has been recognized as Highly Cited Researcher since 2021. His research on membrane fouling, membrane characterization, and novel membrane materials and processes have been highly influential. Professor Tang's invention on aquaporin-based biomimetic membranes has resulted in the successful commercialization of Aquaporin Inside Membranes (AIMs®) by Aquaporins Asia Singapore and has been widely recognized as a highly impactful invention in the desalination field in recent years. His series inventions on rapid water filters and reusable air filters have received international recognitions.
Professor Tang is a Co-Editor of Desalination and an Editorial/Advisory Board Member of several flagship journals in relevant research areas, including Environmental Science & Technology Letters and Journal of Membrane Science. He is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry and a Fellow of Institution of Civil Engineers. Professor Tang is a recipient of the inaugural RGC Senior Research Fellowship, the inaugural HKU Innovator Award, the CAPEES/Nanova Frontier Research Award, the International Desalination Association Water Reuse & Conservation Award for Outstanding Professional, the Singapore Ministry of National Development R&D Merit Award, the Finland Distinguished Professor Program Fellowship, and the International Desalination Association Fellowship.
