Petra Christmann is Professor and Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Research at Rutgers Business School. Petra conducts research on a number of topics in the field of strategic management. She is well-known for her research on corporate environmental sustainability and social responsibility strategies in a global context. Her research in this area examines the determinants of firm self-regulation of environmental and social conduct, the efficacy of international certifiable standards such as ISO 14001 as tools for firm self-regulation, and the link between responsible environmental and social strategies and firm performance. She also conducts research on the performance of mergers and acquisitions. Petra’s research has been published in leading academic journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, the Journal of International Business Studies, Business Ethics Quarterly and the Journal of Business Ethics as well as in practitioner journals such as the Academy of Management Executive. She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of International Business Studies, and has organized the Journal of International Business Studies Paper Development Workshops for many years. She has served on the Teaching Committee for the Business Policy and Strategy Division at the Academy of Management, the Program Committee for the Organizations and the Natural Environment Division at the Academy of Management and on the All-Academy Program Committee for the annual Academy of Management Conference.

Petra teaches courses in business strategy, international management, and international political economy for undergraduate, graduate, and executive audiences and has developed teaching cases and other teaching materials for these courses. Furthermore, Petra is very involved in teaching and mentoring doctoral students, many of whom have moved on to successful academic careers.

Prior to joining Rutgers in 2004 Petra was on the faculty of the Darden School at the University of Virginia for seven years. She received a Ph.D. with a dual major in Strategy and International Business from the Anderson School at UCLA, a graduate degree in International Economic Policy Research from the Kiel Institute of Works Economics in Kiel, Germany, and a Diplom-Kaufmann (Business) degree from the Technische Universität Berlin in Germany.
