Biography

National University of Singapore

Dr. Charles Lim is an Assistant Professor and NRF Fellow (Class of 2019) at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT). His research is focused on quantum cybersecurity and quantum communications. A key feature of his work is the practical security of quantum cryptography, focusing on quantum key distribution (QKD) and quantum random number generation (QRNG). His theoretical results have enabled the development of practical and high-speed quantum cryptosystems with quantifiable long-term information security. Notable examples include the world’s longest distance QKD system [Nature Photonics, 9, 163, (2015)] and the world’s fastest QKD system [Science Advances, 3, e1701491 (2017)]. On the industry side of things, he is consulting for several quantum technology companies and is fronting an international effort to study and propose QKD standards within the ISO framework. He is also leading an international R&D project with Imec to develop chip-based quantum cryptographic devices as part of NRF’s Quantum Engineering Programme. In 2019, Charles won the highly prestigious Singapore’s Young Scientist Award (YSA), which is conferred to young researchers (aged 35 and below) who have shown great potential to be world-class researchers in their fields of expertise.
