Biography

As an urban social anthropologist and social policy specialist I have more than forty years working on the interrelationship between theory and practice around the three main urban development themes of gender, asset accumulation and violence and conflict.

MY ACADEMIC POSITIONS HAVE INCLUDED:

  • Emeritus Professor at the University of Manchester (UoM)
  • 2007-2012 Professor of Urban Development and Director of the Global Urban Research Centre at UoM.
  • Earlier positions included Lead Social Development Specialist, World Bank (1990-2000), Lecturer at the London School of Economics (1986-1990) and at the Development Planning Unit, University College London (1978-1986).

MY INTERRELATED RESEARCH THEMES:

  • Gender transformation, asset accumulation and cities is my current research priority
  • Asset accumulation and poverty reduction, including intergenerational assets, transnational migration assets, and climate change asset adaptation
  • Urban violence and conflict with research in past decades ranging from Jamaica, Colombia and Guatemala to Chile and Kenya
  • Documentary films on urban issues

RECENT ADVISORY APPOINTMENTS AND CAPACITY BUILDING INCLUDES:

  • Senior Advisor to Canadian IDRC’s Safe and Inclusive Cities Research Programme
  • Consultant Gender Advisor to Social Development Direct on ICED programme supporting DFID UK developing their Cities and Infrastructure Strategy
  • Chair of the Board of Trustees of Children Change Colombia
  • Member of the Swedish Research Council Development Committee
  • Research Advisor to Ford Foundation New York on Just Cities Strategy
  • Capacity building in participatory research methodology with researchers in Colombia, Guatemala, Chile and Kenya and WIEGO global network
