Biography
UW Professional & Continuing Education
Brian Flinn has been conducting research and teaching in the UW Department of Materials Science and Engineering since 1991. He is a founding member of the Federal Aviation Administration's Center of Excellence for Advancement Materials for Transport Aircraft Structures. His research includes adhesive bonding, detection of incipient thermal damage and development of witness coatings for thermal and mechanical damage detection in composite materials. His areas of specialties include mechanical testing, thermal analysis, surface characterization and failure analysis. Flinn also serves as the faculty advisor for the UW student chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering and has received numerous teaching awards.
Flinn received his bachelor's and master's in Metallurgical Engineering from Colorado School of Mines and his Ph.D. in Materials from the University of California-Santa Barbara. He is a registered professional engineer and a fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family hiking, skiing and scuba diving.
