Professor Gu has dedicated his career to using information technologies as a tool to address information asymmetry in business and society. As an expert on user-generated content, social media, and digital platforms, he has published over 30 journal articles, mostly in top business school journals including Management Science, MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Journal of Management Information Systems. Professor Gu’s scholarship has been cited more than 12,000 times by peers in academia, a testament to its importance to the field of information systems.

In addition to serving as a senior editor for Information Systems Research, Professor Gu also served as a senior editor for MIS Quarterly between 2014 and 2020. Both journals are regarded as major academic journals in information systems. Professor Gu’s research has received “best paper” awards or research awards from many journals, organizations and conferences, including Information Systems Research, Journal of Retailing, Emerald Publishing, Workshop on Information Systems and Economics (WISE), Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMICS), INFORMS e-Business Section, the China Information Economics Society, Boston University, and Arizona State University.

Professor Gu obtained his PhD and MA degrees from the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania and his BEng dual degrees in International Business and Computer Science from Shanghai Jiaotong University. Before joining Boston University, Professor Gu was the Gladys Davis Distinguished Professor and an associate dean at the W P Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. He also served on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin. Before coming to academia, Professor Gu worked for Arthur Andersen as a consultant.
