Biography
S. Austin Ward is a licensed architect and urban designer. Since joining Machado Silvetti in 2019 he has contributed to the design of various cultural projects in the office. Currently, he is the project manager leading design efforts for both the Cary Downtown Park and the New Bedford Museum of Art.
Prior to joining Machado Silvetti, his professional experience included working with nationally recognized architecture practices in Boston, including designLAB Architects, and NADAAA. His experience includes work on a number of award winning institutional, public, and arts-related projects in the US and abroad. This work has been published in various national publications including Architect Magazine and Architectural Record. Austin's experience extends through all phases of design and construction, including a number of renovation and adaptive re-use projects within historic and culturally sensitive contexts.
Austin holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design with Distinction from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where he received the Award for Outstanding Leadership in Urban Design. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture & Design.
As a native of Arkansas, he spent his early years working on his family farm, an experience that has informed his interests in aspects of building, craft and place. Austin has a passion to generate meaningful work of enduring value, believing the best work comes from a deep understanding of place, and a rich analytical and iterative process of distillation.
