Arpan Kumar Kar

Prof. Arpan Kumar Kar is Amar S Gupta Chair Professor in the Information Systems area in the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India. He holds a joint appointment in the School of Artificial Intelligence. Administratively, he chairs Corporate Relations and is a member of the Board of Academic Programme and Institute of Eminence Committee. His research and teaching interests are in the domain of data science, digital transformation, internet ecosystems, social media and ICT-based public policy. In terms of teaching, he is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017 by Indian Institute of Technology Delhi based on teaching feedback of students. He has supervised eight doctoral students and over sixty masters dissertations.

In total, he has authored over 150 peer reviewed articles and edited 7 research books. He has published over 50 publications in top journals (Journals higher than ABDC A, ABS 3 and Web of Science Q1 journals) like Information Systems Frontiers, International Journal of Information Management, Information Technology and People, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Government Information Quarterly, Journal of Computer Information Systems, Annals of Operations Research, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Enterprise Information Management, Journal of Knowledge Management, Enterprise Information Systems, Decision Analysis, Journal of Global Information Management, etc.

For his research impact, he has received the Research Excellence award based on highest Web of Science citations in India for the period 2015-2020 from Clarivate Analytics. He is a recipient of the Basant Kumar Birla Distinguished Researcher Award based on highest count of ABDC A* / ABS 4 level publications between 2014-2019. His teaching case on Social Media Analytics received the Best Seller Award in IVEY Cases / Harvard Business Publishing.

He is the Editor in Chief of IJIM Data Insights, published by Elsevier, which is a scientific journal focused on Data Science. He is also Associate / Coordinating Editor in International Journal of Electronic Government Research (IGI), Journal of Public Affairs (Wiley), Information Systems Frontiers (Springer), Advances in Theory and Practice of Emerging Markets (Springer) and Global Journal of Flexible Systems Management (Springer). He has been a guest editor for journals like Industrial Marketing Management (ABDC A*), International Journal of Information Management (ABDC A*), Information Systems Frontiers (ABDC A), Australasian Journal of Information Systems (ABDC A) and Journal of Advances in Management Research. He has received reviewing excellence awsrds from multiple journals like Information and Management, Government Information Quarterly, International Journal of Information Management, Land Use Policy, Journal of Retailing and Consumer services, Journal of Computational Science and Expert Systems with Applications. Further he supports journals like Journal of Global Information Management, Journal of Business Research and International Journal of Information Management on the editorial board. He has served as Associate Editor, Track Chair and Conference Chair in reputed conferences like IFIP Working Group 6.11 and 8.6, ICIS, PACIS, ECIS conferences.

He has also handled over 20 research and consulting projects from national and international firms and governments like BASF (Germany), Fidelity International (UK), Department of Science and Technology (GoI), Digital India (GoI), PriceWaterhouse Coopers (UK), Facebook (NcMec/CPF, USA), EY (Bangladesh), Ministry of Electronics and IT (GoI), CIPPEC (Argentina), Ministry of Tribal Affairs (GoI), Ministry of Textiles (GoI), World Data Science Forum (BitGrit, Japan), etc. He has also handled over 20 Training Programmes (Faculty Development Programmes and Management Development Programmes) within and outside India.

He has received numerous awards from reputed organizations like Clarivate Analytics research excellence award, International Federation of Information Processing best paper awards (3 times), ACM ICEGOV Best paper award, Tata Consultancy Services best research project award, Project Management Institute research scholar award, Association of Indian Management Schools Research award, IIT Delhi Teaching Excellence award, Basant Kumar Birla Distinguished researcher award (BimTech), best paper awards from NITs, Best selling Case Study from Ivey Publishing / Harvard Business Publishing and Research Productivity Awards from IIM Rohtak, etc.

In terms of education, he completed his Graduation in Engineering Jadavpur University and Doctorate in Information Systems from XLRI Jamshedpur. Prior to joining IIT Delhi, he has worked in IIM Rohtak, Cognizant Business Consulting and IBM India Research Laboratory.
