Arjan van Dixhoorn graduated in Social and Economic History from Utrecht University in 1997. He acquired his Ph.D. from the Free University of Amsterdam in 2004 with a dissertation on the socio-cultural history of the chambers of rhetoric, organizations of literary sociability in the (Dutch-speaking) late medieval and early modern Low Countries. Since then, he has been a teacher and postdoctoral researcher at the universities of Maastricht, Antwerp, and Ghent, the University of California at Los Angeles (with a Fulbright Junior Scholarship), and Utrecht. In 2013, he was appointed special professor of the history of Zeeland in the World by the Familiefonds Hurgronje at University College Roosevelt.

Arjan van Dixhoorn specializes in the history of the knowledge society, the history of public opinion, and world history. His recent work includes a co-authored article on an allegory of the relationship between Middelburg and the Levant painted in 1700, a co-edited volume and a book chapter on the Middelburg natural philosopher Isaac Beeckman (in press), a and a co-edited volume plus several co-authored chapters on early modern European literary cultures (under review). He is currently finishing a co-authored monograph on a murder case in the Zeeland-Flemish border region in 1944.
