Professor & Donald R. Sobey Professor of International Business
Prior to entering into academia, Anthony Goerzen spent almost 15 years in various sales, marketing, and general management positions in private industry. His last position before returning to graduate school was Vice President of Oxbow Carbon & Minerals, Inc., a medium-sized multinational firm with headquarters in West Palm Beach Florida and annual revenues of $US 400 million.
Dr. Goerzen earned his PhD from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. His thesis entitled, "Network diversity and multinational enterprise performance," defended in 2001, won the Udayan Rege Best Dissertation Award 2000-2002 (a bi-annual PhD thesis competition held by the Administrative Science Association of Canada) and was selected into the final four of the Gunnar Hedlund Best Dissertation Award 2002 (sponsored by the Institute of International Business and the European International Business Association) as well as the Barry Richman Best Dissertation Award 2002 (sponsored by the Academy of Management). The thesis was published as a book entitled, Networks and Location: Organizing the Diversified Multinational Corporation for Value Creation by Palgrave Macmillan in 2005.
Anthony Goerzen''s primary research interests center on the strategic management of firms competing in international markets with a focus on the organizational and performance effects of interfirm networks, alliances, and location. He has published his research in several academic journals including Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Management International Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Academy of Management Perspectives (Academy of Management Executive), and The Journal of Small Business and Entrepreneurship as well as several practitioner journals including Peking University Business Review and Ivey Business Journal. In addition, he has written several book chapters including those in Challenge and Response: North American Firms in East Asia, The Impact of Trade Liberalization: Communicating with APEC Communities, Regional Aspects of Multinationality and Performance, and International Strategic Management: A New Generation. Further, Dr. Goerzen has presented at numerous conferences in Canada, the US, and Europe and has received the 2002 Best Conference Paper Award and the 2003 Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of International Business, the 2007 Best Reviewer Award from the Administrative Science Association of Canada, the 2007-2008 Best Reviewer Award from the Journal of International Business Studies, and his research has been shortlisted for the Carolyn Dexter Award and the Doug Nigh Award (both sponsored by the Academy of Management).
Dr. Goerzen has also developed a number of cases and teaching materials. His case studies can be found in several books including Strategic Management, Cases in Strategic Management, Country Manager, International Business: An Asia Pacific Perspective, International Management, Fundamentals of International Management, The Environment of Business: International Perspectives, Asia-Pacific Cases in Strategic Management, and International Management. One of his studies, The Global Branding of Stella Artois, was on Ivey Publishing''s Top 10 Best Sellers from 2001-2007 as was also the second runner-up in the 2001 Annual Case Competition, an annual teaching case competition held by the Academy of International Business.
