Anne Smith (B.S., McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia; MBA & Ph.D., Kenan-Flagler Business School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) is the King and Judy Rogers Professor in Business, Professor of Management and Head of the Department of Management in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

At the University of Tennessee, she has been awarded the Allen H. Keally Teaching Award for Assistant Professors in 2003 and the 2004 Keally Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Business. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Tennessee in 2001, Anne was involved in executive education at McGill University in Montreal and taught in McGill’s Japan MBA program. In 1995, she earned the undergraduate teaching award at McGill University’s Faculty of Management. In 2000, Anne received the MBA Professor of the Year at the Anderson Schools of Management, University of New Mexico. Anne’s work experience has included government contract accounting at Siecor (joint venture of Corning Glass and Siemens), international banking officer at NationsBank (now Bank of America), and various consulting engagements.

Her research focuses on issues related to strategy-making processes, organizational failure, high-performing middle managers, and outcomes in deregulating or rapidly changing industries. Much of her research has used a qualitative, interpretative approach to investigate how managers understand of their organizational processes. Her research has been published in Organization Science,Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, Journal of Management Inquiry, Journal of Operations Management, European Management Journal, Journal of High Technology Management Research, Journal of Business Research, and other academic journals. She is currently an Associate Editor at Organizational Research Methods, primarily handling field-based submissions.
