Biography

Stanford Continuing Studies

I am an experienced educator, researcher, and consultant passionate about bringing linguistics to work. I help linguists figure out better ways of articulating how our expertise is useful, and I help the world of work use linguists to solve the kinds of puzzles that we are uniquely equipped to solve.

I give workshops as Career Linguist, and with organizational partners The FrameWorks Institute and Anecdote International.

Why do organizations need linguists? Because language is how things get done in any organization. Language is a complex system that is multidimensional, polysemous, and constantly changing. A layered approach to understanding how language means in context (such as linguists bring) provides insight into identity and culture, and can inform how organizations and individuals do things like include or exclude / invite or distance / welcome or "other."

Skills: Narrative, Storytelling, Consulting, Training and Facilitation, Ethnography, Quantitative and Qualitative research, Curriculum Design, Instructional Technology, Language, Culture, Cross-Cultural Communication, Applied Communication Strategy, Social Media.
