Biography
Dr. Anita Gupta is an adjunct assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine and pain medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include pain medicine, health policy, biotechnology, drug development, corporate and government affairs.
Dr. Gupta is recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, as the first appointed woman physician anesthesiologist to lead the expansion of the only opioid overdose antidote, naloxone, at the U.S. FDA appointed by leaders at the American Society of Anesthesiologists. She is also recognized as the first woman physician anesthesiologist to Co-Chair the American Society of Anesthesiologist Committee on Prescription Opioid Abuse. Dr. Gupta is also an active faculty member at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.
Recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, for her life long commitment to addressing global public health in pain, drug safety and policy. She is a active, practicing, healthcare professional for over 20 years and she serves as a member of the National Academies of Science’s Global Forum on the transformation of the patient experience, with one of the top 50 most cited commentaries in 2020, 2021. At the National Academies of Sciences, she has pioneered the understanding of patient experience in pain and the role of digital transformation, particularly with pain.

Featured expert on Washington Post, Forbes, CNN, on emerging threats including the COVID-19 pandemic, Opioid crisis, Zika crisis, Philadelphia Amtrak catastrophic train crash, and several other high-profile expert medical cases. Dr. Gupta serves as an executive officer, board of director of public and private sector organizations, and an appointed member of the National Academies of Sciences Global Forum, National Quality Forum, and has served the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Defense and The Milken Institute Faster Cures advisory council.
Dr. Gupta graduated from Harvard Business School after completing the General Management Program. She completed her residency in anesthesiology at Georgetown University School of Medicine and her pain fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She received her doctorate in pharmacy from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Dr. Gupta completed her master’s in public policy and health policy from Princeton University and her medical school at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
