Angelique Levi

Dr. Angelique W. Levi, MD has been honored by the American Health Council as “Best in Medicine.” Acquiring over an impressive 15 years in the healthcare sector, Dr. Levi has gained exemplary knowledge as a Physician, as well experience as Director of Outreach in the Department of Pathology at the Yale University School of Medicine and as an Associate Professor, while also becoming extremely well-known for her expertise in Prostate Pathology and Cytopathology.

Keen to pursue a career in medicine from the outset, the aspiring doctor’s academic endeavours began with her attaining her Bachelor of Science from Union College, where she also graduated with honors from the Biology Society. Following this, Dr. Levi enrolled at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Medical School, where she achieved her medical degree in 1997. During her time studying, she was awarded the Medical School Dean’s Research Scholarship and the Hawkins Pathology Award from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She also states that the opportunity to participate in the Pathology Fellowship at the University of Rochester had a significant impact on her future career aspirations.

On completion of her medical studies, Dr, Levi then embarked on a Residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Johns Hopkins University, followed by Fellowship training at the same institution in Cytopathology. She became Certified in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology in 2002 by the American Board of Pathology, and in Cytopathology in 2003, again by the same Board. She also obtained her CT State Medical License, which remains active through 2019.

As part of her many accolades, Dr. Levi had the prestigious opportunity to have many of her manuscripts published in peer reviewed Pathology and Urology journals, including ‘The Positive Impact of Simultaneous Implementation of the BD FocalPoint GS Imaging System and Lean Principles on the Operation of Gynecologic Cytology.’ and ‘Prostate Cancer Genomic Classifier Relates More Strongly to Gleason Grade Group Than Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System Score in Multiparametric Prostate Magnetic Resonance Imaging-ultrasound Fusion Targeted Biopsies.’ Additionally, she has contributed a book chapter ‘Economics, Regulations, and Trends in Practice’ in a 16 chapter Pathology book published by Springer International entitled, Rapid On-site Evaluation (ROSE).

In recognition of her successes in both the medical and teaching arena, Dr. Levi leads the pathology presentations at the Smilow Yale Cancer Center multiparametric MRI/ultrasound fusion (Artemis) targeted Prostate Tumor Board. She has also been invited to speak at the Department of Urology hosted CME course “The Evolving Role of Imaging in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Prostate Cancer” at Yale University, as well as for the Department of Pathology at Mt. Sinai Health System in New York with a seminar entitled “Prostate Cancer: Active Surveillance and Artemis”. In addition, she co-initiated and currently co-directs the Multidisciplinary Gynecologic Colposcopy Correlation Conference at Yale, a multidisciplinary educational quality improvement initiative attended by pathology and obstetrics & gynecology trainees, clinicians and staff designed to: improve the quality of clinical and pathologic evaluation, diagnosis, and current management guidelines of precancerous cervical neoplasia; provide an opportunity for interdisciplinary patient care; and improve trainee education.

In a further demonstration of Dr. Levi’s abilities and skills, she is a Clinical Investigator in the Clinician Educator Track at Yale University School of Medicine, where her research interests are primarily in the areas of Gynecologic Cytology and Prostate Pathology. Dr. Levi has served as a co-investigator in many clinical trials involving advances in prostate cancer treatment and diagnosis, and gynecologic cervical cancer screening and prevention and Treatment of High-Grade Pre-Neoplastic Cervical Lesions (CIN 2/3) Using a Novel “Prime and Pull” Strategy. New treatments for many conditions are tested in clinical trials, which ultimately bring lifesaving new drugs and devices to the patients who need them most. She is also an attending Pathologist on the Genitourinary and Cytopathology subspecialty services at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Between practicing medicine, clinical research, and delivering medical education, Dr. Levi’s daily routine will see her time mainly spent reviewing clinical cases in Pathology. This will see her work between the two highly regarded institutions Yale New Haven Hospital, a 1,541 bed, not for profit academic medical center, and the primary teaching site for the Yale School of Medicine, and Yale School of Medicine and Yale University, a research university that focuses on students and encourages learning as an essential way of life. Yale describes itself as a place for connection, creativity and innovation among cultures and across disciplines.

In her role as Pathology Outreach Director, Dr. Levi has the unique opportunity to interact with regional community practices and international clients who refer pathology cases to YaleMedicine, encompassing Yale University and Yale New Haven Health. She serves as the interface between clinical providers and the pathology laboratory, which involves a myriad of responsibilities: practice visits to improve workflow; working with hospital information technology and electronic medical records across the health system to improve pathology reporting; and general provider education about pathology interpretations, associated clinical implications, and newly offered laboratory tests. Dr. Levi was invited as a guest speaker on Yale Cancer Answers, a CT public radio podcast, to discuss “Understanding Your Pathology Report.” Recently, she directed Yale Pathology’s inaugural Outreach Conference “A Practical Approach for GYN Clinicians and Staff” held at the Blake Hotel in New Haven. Dr. Levi also provides secondary opinions for cancer patients. A Second Opinion Prevented Unnecessary Cancer Surgery.

To remain ahead in her profession and ensure she is providing the highest level of care as a physician and education provider, Dr. Levi is a member of various organizations including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the American Society of Cytopathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. She attends national and international meetings hosted by pathology and other medical professional organizations to present her leading edge clinical research, promote Yale Pathology services and the launch of new laboratory tests both developed and offered at Yale Pathology.

Dr. Levi attributes her success to the exemplar training she has received and the mentors she has been fortunate to work alongside at both John Hopkins and Yale University. In the future, Dr. Levi aspires to continue taking a cooperative multidisciplinary approach, with the aim to localize treatment in impactful care and also redefine treatments with an emphasis on conservative options in clinical management.

When not busy working, Dr Levi enjoys spending time with her family, as well as being active by playing tennis. Dr. Levi dedicates her time when possible to charitable endeavors, including Paddle Against Hunger – Bridgeport Rescue Mission. She serves as Junior Sports Chair, and is also an active member of the Patterson Club in Connecticut.
