Andrew Choong

Andrew is a senior consultant vascular, endovascular and aortic surgeon at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore and an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

He graduated from Imperial College London, UK in 2003. He began higher vascular surgical training in 2008 as part of the St Mary’s Hospital, North West Thames rotation of the London Deanery and Postgraduate School of Surgery. He further developed his vascular and endovascular skills as the international fellow at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Queensland, Australia and has undergone super-specialised training in complex thoracoabdominal open, hybrid and endovascular aortic surgery during his time there, as well as the Imperial Vascular Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, London, UK. In 2014, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training in the UK. Andrew was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine (PhD) from the University of Warwick in 2020 for his thesis “An Investigation into Unusual Access Sites for Arterial Endovascular Interventions”.

Prior to joining the National University Heart Centre, Singapore, he was a consultant in vascular and endovascular surgery at King’s College Hospital, London, UK. He also previously held posts as both an Associate Lecturer at the University of Queensland, Australia and a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia before his appointment as an Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore.

He has won multiple awards including the HJ Windsor prize from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Professor William Burnett Research Fellowship from the University of Queensland. In 2014, by examination, he was awarded the Gold Medal for achieving the Fellowship of the European Board of Vascular Surgery with Honours, for the highest overall examination performance of all candidates. Of note, this is still the only internationally accredited vascular surgical examination that includes a formal assessment of open and endovascular technical surgical skill and performance.

Whilst Andrew is committed to clinical excellence and patient care above all else, he is also an active clinical researcher and supervisor with over 100 publications (peer reviewed journals, book chapters and invited articles) and a similar number of presentations at international conferences. He is regularly invited to share his expertise and research at international conferences organised by his vascular surgical contemporaries. He is associate program director for the National University Health System Research Residency Programme and also a dedicated clinical teacher. Previously a regular faculty member of the London Postgraduate School of Surgery, he regularly taught all aspects of vascular and endovascular surgery to London core and higher surgical trainees. His teaching achievements have been recognised by the award of Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Training of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Outside of work, Andrew is first and foremost, a devoted husband, father, son and brother. When he can find the time, he enjoys the Arte Suave that is Brazilian jiu jitsu as well as guitar playing, scuba diving and snowboarding.
