Biography
Amit M. Shelat, D.O. is board certified in neurology by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. and the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. Appointed by the New York State Board of Regents, Dr. Shelat is the Vice-Chairman of the New York State Board for Medicine. He is also appointed to the New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Neurological Society. Dr. Shelat is currently Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurology at NYU Long Island School of Medicine.
Dr. Shelat is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, the Federation of State Medical Boards, the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners, the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN).
Dr. Shelat has extensive experience serving as an expert medical witness in numerous medical malpractice cases involving various neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and Arnold-Chiari Malformation. Prior to his current clinical appointment, he was an Attending Neurologist at The Chiari Institute, a specialty neuroscience center dedicated to the treatment of Arnold-Chiari Malformation, syringomyelia and tethered cord syndrome.
Dr. Shelat completed his neurology residency in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Program at Northwell Health. He completed his medical doctorate at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Shelat holds the Master of Science degree in Healthcare Management (MHCM) from the Harvard School of Public Health and the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree in Health Policy and Management from Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University (NYU). He completed his undergraduate studies at NYU and graduated cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa with Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and psychology with departmental honors.
