Dr. Amin is an internationally recognized leader in the field of hospital medicine. He pioneered one of the nation’s first hospitalist programs in 1998 at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Medical Center. He is the first and only chairman of the department of medicine at an academic medical school and academic medical center worldwide. At UCI, Dr. Amin served as Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Quality for 12 years; Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine for 6 years; Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program for 14 years; and Medicine Clerkship Director for 14 years.
During the course of his career, Dr. Amin has lead efforts to improve the quality of care and safety of patients in hospital environments. He has served as principal investigator, co-investigator, and faculty sponsor on clinical trials, registries and research projects focusing on clinical topics such as VTE, pneumonia, diabetes, and heart failure.
Dr. Amin has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles. He is the co-editor/co-author of the Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine, published by the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and co-editor of Contemporary Hospitalists’ Guide to Anticoagulation. He has held numerous positions with SHM. He was chair of SHM’s Education Committee for 4 years, and he served as the 2006 SHM Annual Meeting Course Director and on the society’s board of directors. Dr. Amin is the former associate editor of Hospital Medicine Secrets.
He is the recipient of numerous federally funded, industry-sponsored, and foundation awards focused on quality of care, medical education, and outcomes research. Honors have included the American College of Physicians Special Recognition Award; “America’s Top Physicians” by the Consumers’ Research Council of America; the Orange County Physician of Excellence Award; ACP’s Top 10 Hospitalist Award; and the Venous Research Award for Quality Improvement and Implementation of Best Practices from the Venous Disease Coalition (VDC)/Vascular Disease Foundation (VDF).
He is a senior fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), master of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and Academic Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Amin is a graduate of Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He completed his internship, residency in internal medicine, and chief residency at UCI. He also earned a healthcare MBA at UCI and an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from the University of California, San Diego.
