Alex S. Keuroghlian is Director of the Division of Education and Training at The Fenway Institute; Michele and Howard J Kessler Chair and Director, Division of Public and Community Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH); Associate Chief, Public and Community Psychiatry, MGH Department of Psychiatry; and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS).
They are principal investigator of the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center, a HRSA-funded cooperative agreement to improve health care for LGBTQIA+ people at health centers. Dr. Keuroghlian is concurrently principal investigator of the 2iS Coordinating Center for Technical Assistance, also funded by HRSA, to implement innovative intervention strategies nationally for people with HIV in four priority areas: substance use disorders, LGBTQIA+ youth, incarceration and telehealth. They were previously principal investigator of the HRSA-funded E2i Coordinator Center for Technical Assistance, which implemented evidence-informed and culturally tailored interventions nationally for people with HIV in four focus areas: transgender women, Black men who have sex with men, behavioral health integration into primary medical care, and identifying and addressing trauma.
Dr. Keuroghlian is director of the MGH Psychiatry Gender Identity Program, co-director of the HMS Sexual and Gender Minority Health Equity Initiative, clerkship director for the fourth-year HMS medical student elective in sexually and gender diverse health, and co-director of the HMS Advanced Integrated Science Course in Sex- and Gender-Informed Medicine.
They received their medical degree and Masters in Neurosciences from the Stanford University School of Medicine. They completed their psychiatry residency at the MGH/McLean Hospital training program, where they served as Chief Resident in Public and Community Psychiatry, and a Master of Public Health (Health Policy and Management) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Dr. Keuroghlian was awarded the MGH Primary Clinical Experience Teaching Award by Harvard medical students, the Jonathan F. Borus Outstanding Educator Award by the HMS Department of Psychiatry, the HMS Excellence in Clinical Instruction in Psychiatry Award, the HMS Young Mentor Award, and the HMS Scholarly Engagement Excellence in Student Mentoring Award.
At Fenway, Dr. Keuroghlian works as a clinical psychiatrist within the Behavioral Health Department and undertakes research at The Fenway Institute. They have authored over 100 research articles, review articles, and book chapters on topics that include gender-affirming hormone therapy and surgery, HIV medication adherence, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorders among transgender adults, sexual orientation and gender identity data collection, caring for LGBTQIA+ immigrants, and homelessness among LGBTQIA+ youth. They are co-editor of the textbook, Transgender and Gender Diverse Health Care: The Fenway Guide, published by McGraw Hill.
