Assistant Professor of Architectural History & Theory at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid

Biography

Alejandro Valdivieso is a licensed architect currently finishing his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in the History and Theory of Architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (UPMETSAM). As a Fulbright Scholar, he received a Post-Professional Master in Design Studies in History and Philosophy of Design from Harvard University Graduate School of Design (Postgraduate Postprofessional Research Master´s Degree in History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture). He holds a Professional Master´s Degree (M.Arch) and a Bachelor (B.Arch) of Architecture from Universidad de Alcalá (UAH-EA) in Madrid. Valdivieso develops his work through different formats and media: as an active practicing architect, as writer and editor for several platforms, and as an educator.

He founded the Madrid-based office Valdivieso Arquitectos in 2012. Previously trained at Herreros Arquitectos, Ábalos+Sentkiewicz and Abalos&Herreros. In 2016 he recieved, amongst others awards, the COAM (Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid) Award for one of his first built projects, listed within the VI edition of the Arquia/próxima program.

Currently an Adjunct Professor (Profesor Asociado) of Architectural History and Theory at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Departamento de Composición Arquitectónica, Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid) and Visiting Professor within the Máster en Proyectos Arquitectónicos Avanzados MPAA#11, LABoratorio de trabajo (Fall 2020) y Taller de trabajo (Spring 2020) #02 Crítica Práctica: ‘Logística vs. Identidad [en la ciudad actual]’. (With Professors Ignacio Senra and Luis Rojo de Castro).

His work has been recognized several times (‘MDes Final Project Research & Development Award for History and Philosophy of Architecture’), Real Colegio Complutense at Harvard Scholarships, Secretaria de Estado de Cultura del Gobierno de España, and published as book chapters, papers, writings and participations in different symposia and conferences.
