Scottish Investment Operations chief executive Alan Thornburrow has joined Prince Charles' charity Business in the Community as its Scotland director.

Thornburrow led Scottish Investment Operations since 2006, whose members include Baillie Gifford, Franklin Templeton, Morgan Stanley and the recently merged Standard Life Aberdeen Group.

He started his career with Scottish Widows as a sales consultant in 1996, moving to Franklin Templeton Investments in 2000 and then to Brandes Investment Partners in Toronto in 2002.

Thornburrow oined IA Clarington in Toronto as head of product development and research in 2003 before moving back to Franklin Templeton Investments for a one-year project in 2005 which brought him back to Scotland.

He joined Scottish Investment Operations as chief executive in 2006.

Thornburrow is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and is an honorary professor at Glasgow Caledonian University's School for Business and Society.

He was a former chair of the Institute of Directors for Edinburgh and Lothians and vice chairman for Career Ready in Scotland.

Business in the Community (BITC) was launched in 1982 in the wake of the Brixton riots initially with a group of 30 businesses agreeing to work together to work towards building a fairer society and more sustainable future.

Prince Charles joined the charity as its president in 1985. and membership has since grown to core of around 800 organisations.

Commenting on Thornburrow's appointment, Jane Wood, executive director of membership and nations at BITC added: “We are delighted to have appointed someone of Alan’s calibre into the role of director for Business in the Community Scotland.
