Biography
Professor Adele Green MB BS, PhD, MSc, FAFPHM, AC, is Professor of Epidemiology in the Epithelial Sciences Research Group, School of Translational Medicine, University of Manchester. She is also Senior Scientist, Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR), Brisbane, Australia and Head, Population and Cancer Studies Unit, QIMR. After graduating in medicine (1st Class Hons) at University of Queensland, she worked in hospitals in Queensland for several years before undertaking doctoral research at the University of Queensland and being awarded a PhD Epidemiology University of Queensland in 1984. With a Neil Hamilton Fairley Post-doctoral Travelling Fellowship awarded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) she undertook further study in UK, earning MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in 1985, and in USA, as a Visiting Lecturer in Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston. On returning to the QIMR in Australia she became Head of its Epidemiology and Population Health Unit in 1996 and was appointed a Senior Principal Research Fellow. In 1997 she was Visiting Medical Research Officera at The Wellcome Trust, London, and in 2000 she became Deputy Director, QIMR (till 2013) and Head, Population and Cancer Studies Unit. She also holds Professorships at the University of Queensland and Griffith University, and Conjoint Professor, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane Conjoint Professorship, Queensland University of Technology. In 2004 she was named in the Australian Honours List as a Companion of the Order of Australia. She has served on many Australian research bodies including the Australian Cancer Research Foundation''s Medical Research Advisory Committee; the National Public Health Partnership; and the National Health and Medical Research Council and was Chair of the NHMRC''s Health Advisory Committee 2000-2005. Internationally she has been a chair or member of many committees at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)in Lyon, France, including Chair of the Working Group on Artificial UV and Skin Cancer in 2005; member of the Working Group on Code of Good Practice for IARC Researchers 2006-2008; and member of the Working Party for the Monograph on Radiation and Cancer in 2009. She is a Member of the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection and of the IARC Scientific Council. In 2009 she was appointed Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Manchester on a part-time basis. Her main area of interest is cancer epidemiology, with a particular interest in melanoma and other skin cancer, as well as ovarian cancer and oesophageal cancer. The main aims are to understand better the causes and pathways to development of cancer, so as to achieve better control of the disease, especially through primary prevention.
