Biography
Brookings Institution
Peter Mandaville is a nonresident senior fellow with the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World. He is currently on leave from George Mason University and is based at Georgetown University's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs. He is also an adjunct scholar with the RAND Corporation. From 2015 to 2016, he served as a senior advisor in the secretary of state’s Office of Religion and Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, where his work focused on ISIS, countering violent extremism (CVE), and sectarian conflict in the Middle East. From 2011 to 2012, he was a member of the secretary of state's policy planning staff where he helped to shape the U.S. response to the Arab uprisings. He has testified before congress on political Islam and appeared widely on national and international media outlets. He is the author or editor of several books including “Islam and Politics” (2nd edition, Routledge, 2014), “Politics from Afar: Transnational Diasporas & Networks” (Columbia University Press, 2012), and “Transnational Muslim Politics: Reimagining the Umma” (Routledge, 2001).
