About the course

In this interactive foundational session, students will learn fundamental distinctions between problems and polarities and how to see the predictable pattern present in polarities. Participants will practice polarity mapping to help individuals and systems harness the tension in a polarity in a way that leads to sustainable action. Instructors will teach the philosophy and methodology of polarity theory and show how to practically apply research that suggests leaders, teams, and organizations that leverage polarities well outperform those who don't.

A crucial component of this course focuses on deepening awareness and understanding of the key polarities at play in oneself as a leader, coach, or practitioner. Through self-assessments, activities, and reflection, individuals begin to examine the ways in which they navigate polarities in order to more effectively help others do the same.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the history, research, and frameworks of polarities and paradox
  • Identify and “see polarities” – the most difficult skill of mastery
  • Use practical techniques to help others navigate polarities
  • Leverage the polarities at play in oneself in order to better lead, coach, or consult
