Programme Overview
The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching from Henley Business School is a part-time course that is normally taken over nine months. It is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), Association for Coaching (AC) and the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC).
The programme attracts a diverse range of participants, from those wishing to start a new career in coaching to senior leaders aiming to embed a coaching culture within their organisations.
You can choose between in-person or live-online delivery. For the in-person version, you will join us at our Greenlands campus three times for residential workshops. The rest of the course content is then delivered online through videos, exercises, coaching supervision practice and 360-feedback.
You will also need to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of coaching practice outside of the workshops and online learning.

Programme structure
The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching is a flexible programme offered in a variety of study formats:
- In-person workshops (either on weekdays or weekends, delivered mostly at Greenlands but also in London and at Henley’s international campuses)
- Accelerated in-person workshops
- NEW: Live-online workshops
For all formats you will need to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of coaching practice outside of the workshops and online learning.
In-person workshops
Study is part-time over 9 months, with 7 days of in-person workshops over the first 3 months followed by 6 months of virtual supported study including mentoring and supervision sessions. The majority of the in-person workshops are held at our Greenlands campus.
Live-online workshops
Study is part-time over approximately 10 months. It is delivered in stages with the live-online workshops delivered in 2 hour sessions, typically 3 sessions per week (over one day and one evening). Through the digital platform you will have live-learning and tutor and group interaction. The mentoring and supervision sessions are delivered after each workshop stage, not at the end of the programme. Further content is delivered online via a combination of videos and exercises.
Programme content
The Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching runs over a total of nine months part-time, as broken down below:
PCEC: Pre-Programme
Before your course starts, you will complete:
- Background reading
- Self-reflection exercises
- A course questionnaire
- These activities should take you around 3-5 hours to complete.
PCEC Workshop 1: Self-awareness as a coach (2 days)
This workshop explores your personal skills and attributes, and your beliefs and values around coaching. A basic framework for coaching is introduced.
You will examine:
- What coaching is
- Your role as a coach
- Your personal coaching style
- The GROW model
PCEC: Pre-Workshop Study
Before Workshop 2 starts, you will complete:
- Relevant reading and reflection activities
- Coaching practice
- A formative assignment
- You will undertake a similar programme of preparation before Workshop 3.
PCEC Workshop 2: Tools and techniques (3 days)
This workshop enables you to try out different tools and techniques and understand the underpinning psychological concepts.
You will study:
- Psychological models
- Coaching approaches
- Coaching tools and techniques
- You will then be in a position to undertake reflective practice.
PCEC Workshop 3: Integration (2 days)
This workshop continues the development of coaching competencies, provides opportunities for observed sessions with feedback, and the opportunity to integrate the materials into a coherent approach.
You will examine:
- The solution-focused model
- Coaching ethics
- Coaching supervision
PCEC: Post-Workshop Virtual Supported Study (6 months)
After Workshop 3, you will follow a programme of virtual study that includes:
- Coach mentoring (group and 1:1 activities)
- Coaching supervision
- Coaching practice (minimum of 20 hours)
- Access to the Henley Centre for Coaching: videos, webinars and further reading
PCEC: Assessment
Following completion of Workshop 3, you will undertake 20 hours’ coaching practice and obtain feedback from all clients. At the end of the course, you will submit a 2,000-word assessment reflecting on your development as a coach and a 30-minute recording of a coaching session. These will form the basis of the award of your Certificate.
PCEC: Post-Programme
You will have ongoing contact with Henley Business School through:
- Access to resources from the online learning portal for up to 12 months
- University of Reading and Henley alumni status
- Option to continue membership of The Henley Centre for Coaching (fee payable)
Further study
The Certificate forms part of the MSc in Coaching & Behavioural Change. Exemptions may be available if you wish to continue your study. Alternatively, you could develop your career with the Professional Certificate in Team, Board and Systemic Coaching.
Accreditation
The Certificate is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), Association for Coaching (AC) and the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC). This recognises the quality of the learning experience and provides the option for individual accreditation with any or all of these bodies following successful completion of the programme.
