Who should attend
Whether you are newly independent or looking for a tune-up, this workshop series provides practical lessons to take control of your personal finances.
About the course
From foundational skills like setting goals and creating budgets to more advanced topics such as investment strategies, you will gain practical skills and essential knowledge to confidently make decisions about your personal finances.
Workshop 1: Lay of the Land - You and Your Finances
This workshop introduces the participants to the earnings and spending relationships and pattern, provides a few fundamental tools to get started tracking spending patterns to build a spending and savings plan.
Activities after class: Start tracking earnings and spending, pivot tables
Workshop 2: Working Through Your Budget with a Goal in Mind
This workshop takes the next steps in building your spending and savings plan. We start by establishing a savings/spending goal (save $10,000 for a down-payment), translate that goal into smaller, easily digestible chunks (3-year plan, for example, and monthly savings goals), then identifying ways to accomplish that goal.
Activities after class: Identify a savings goal, a time horizon and monthly changes to meet that goal.
Workshop 3: Investing Types and Method
This workshop helps participants understand the types of savings plans and investments. We walk through the differences of stocks and bonds, talk about insurance types and the risk-reward trade-off. We discuss compounding and the power of starting early.
Activities after class: Open a stock account, purchase at least 1 share of stock
Workshop 4: Active Investing
At the end of Workshop 3, participants will be asked to open an individual trading account (Schwab, TD-Ameritrade, Robinhood, etc.), fund the account and purchase at least 1 share of stock. During Workshop 4 we will look at the stocks that people purchased, track the history of prices of those stocks, talk about dividends and stock-splits and talk about the reasons why people chose the stocks that they did. Participants will engage in research to build out a diversified portfolio of stocks that they would like to hold.
Activities after class: Make another purchase of a stock, identify a schedule of actively saving and investing money towards a goal.
Workshop 5: Goals PLUS Investing
This workshop helps participants think about long run goals through investing and budget mindfulness. We dive back into the budgeting process and help participants make adjustments (that include modifying investments) to help reach longer-term goals and start on a path to investing. We ask participants to talk about the stocks that they purchased and stocks they would like to own.
You will take the lessons learned in each workshop and apply them in after-class activities assigned by the instructor.
Convenient and Accessible
Each of the five two-hour workshops will be delivered online and will be recorded. Recordings will be available after the live session.
