Are you moving into the role of a manager or supervisor for the first time? You will need techniques and competences for running your team smoothly and effectively; you also have to deal with pressure from your manager and team members. But you can’t navigate this phase in your career relying only on the skills you learned in your undergraduate studies.

Your personal management development track

The RSM Diploma in General Management provides you with carefully designed stepping stones that will boost your management skills, and help you excel in your new leadership role. You can complete this management training programme in one year, or two. The modules and content can be tailored to your personal and professional preferences. Each module requires three days in the executive education classroom in Rotterdam.

You will experience a wide variety of learning methods; you’ll prepare at home with reading, online tutorials and exercises before you come to the workshops to learn from your teachers. You will also learn from your peers in sessions facilitated by our top faculty. You will be formally graded on each module, and on your in-company research project.

Curriculum

The diploma programme is made up of five modules. Three of these can be customised to suit your personal and professionals development needs. the Team Leadership module is mandatory for all participants. Finally, you will complete the programme with your applied research project

Team Leadership (3 days)

Do you have the skills to be an effective team leader? Are you struggling with team leadership challenges and issues, or need to boost your skills to manage your team to collective excellence? In this three-day workshop, you will learn relevant team leader skills from RSM Executive Education's top faculty members.

Your new knowledge and tools to deal effectively with motivational problems, dysfunctional team members, conflicts and lack of a common direction can be applied into your work immediately.

After this programme, you will be able to:

  • understand how leading teams differs from leading individuals
  • deal with difficult team members before they affect the entire team
  • get the most out of your team members, knowledge and insights for collective decisions
  • create a strong and cohesive team identity by using effective leaderships tools
  • develop and communicate your vision for your team to inspire and motivate their efforts

Finance for Non-Financial Managers (2 days)

Acquire a strong grounding in the most widely used financial tools. In two days on campus – plus some online work prior to and after the course – you will learn about financial reporting in balance sheets, cash flow and income statements, and how these are used for decision-making, performance management, business improvements and valuation. From November, RSM's Finance for Non-Financial Managers will include an individual assignment and a follow-up feedback session with your professor to discuss your progress.

When you have completed this programme, you will be able to:

  • understand the key tools used by financial specialists
  • assess the financial performance of your organisation
  • interpret and evaluate financial data with your newfound practical skills
  • understand how organisations have become global leaders by driving their operational excellence
  • utilise your new, practical skills to interpret and evaluate financial data.

**Foundations of Strategy (3 days)

Learn how to work with the key elements of strategy so you can tackle business challenges, and recognise competitive advantages. You’ll gain actionable tips and skills to use directly in your job and organisation.

When you have completed this programme, you will be able to:

  • use the latest knowledge to implement strategies in your job
  • analyse industries, competition, success factors and organisational competencies – and understand their effect on strategy
  • help your organisation conceptualise and formulate strategies
  • identify the major challenges in executing strategy and their effects
  • understand how acquisitions and alliances help strategy
  • propose an action plan that will help you tackle your business challenges.

Operations Management (3 days)

Better understand the context of operational challenges, and how you can influence them in a positive way. You will also learn what and who your barriers are, and explore research insights and real-life business cases to make the process more transparent.

When you have completed this programme, you will be able to:

  • identify how your role and management skills can aid the overall success of an organisation through operations and supply chains
  • apply grounded theoretical concepts to your own business challenges
  • recognise success and failure within operations and supply chain management
  • translate and implement best practices from various industries and functions within your own organisation
  • contribute to the operational success of your organisation within your own leadership role
  • drive your operational excellence by applying the learning of global leaders.

**Marketing and Value Creation (3 days)

Get an in-depth view of critical issues in marketing and value creation. You will focus on internal and external perspectives. Marketing is typically understood to focus on external factors such as customers and competition, but in fact building a shared understanding of how the organisation creates value for customers is crucial to longer term organisational performance. So how can your management skills boost your company’s marketing strategy?

When you have completed this programme, you will be able to:

  • understand the customer and the role of marketing throughout the organisation
  • have the skills to use vocabulary and tools of modern marketing
  • be able to create value through products, brands, services, and effective leadership
  • know how to bring products and services to the market and create revenue
  • recognise how technology affects the marketing and business environment.

Business Model Innovation (3 days)

Boost your knowledge and skills with innovative methods to successfully create, assess and implement business model innovation in your organisation, in order to stay ahead of the competition. Drawing on powerful research, the three-day Business Model Innovation programme by RSM Executive Education will inspire you to bring transformational practices into your business.

When you have completed this programme, you will be able to:

  • learn how to evaluate business innovation from a financial point of view
  • develop innovative and potentially viable proposals for new business models l
  • learn and practise the methodology for developing new business models
  • explore relevant methodologies, particularly analysis of the environment, individual and collective creativity techniques and business case analysis
  • practise a number of models that can be used in the application of these methodologies, such as the five-forces model, the disruptive innovation model, the business model canvas, the market learning model, the lean innovation approach, and team structures.

Customer-centric Strategy for B2B Markets (3 days)

Understand the dynamics of B2B markets so you can enhance value for your customers and your company. Learn to see things from a client’s perspective, and anticipate the demands such a strategy makes on your function, role and team.

When you have completed this programme, you will be able to:

  • understand the changing dynamics in B2B markets
  • have acquired a deep understanding of creating customer value and value renewal in B2B markets
  • have learned how to strengthen your customer knowledge and connections with internal and external customers
  • know how to enhance the customer-centric mindset in your organisation
  • be ready to execute a plan to contribute to your company’s commercial effectiveness.

Who should attend

This programme is for soon-to-be or recently appointed first-time managers, team leaders or project managers who would like to consolidate their management skills and update them with the latest academic management research. You will learning new practical leadership skills and tools that can be used immediately.

Most candidates will already have led projects and project teams. Many will also have a few years of post-graduate experience, and are keen to boost their leadership development.
