This short course provides leadership training in the skills required to manage yourself and other people, and demonstrates how excellent leadership transforms organisations.

There are major challenges facing the leaders of today who seek to shape organisations for tomorrow. New models of leadership are emerging to address these challenges, and these developments require a different approach to thinking about effective leadership. There is also an increasing demand for ethical and engaging leadership that enhances the performance and well-being of employees, as well as the performance of the organisation.

Course participants are drawn from a diverse range of backgrounds and are individually selected on to courses to promote the sharing of different perspectives and alternative approaches to day-to-day challenges.

Programme structure

Our approach is interactive and personal

You will be encouraged to conduct one in-depth personal styles assessment (The Saville Consulting Wave), and one 360-degree leadership skills assessment as pre-assignments. These assessment methods are included in your tuition fee, and they will act as a springboard to truly uncovering your leadership strengths. Highly interactive lectures, discussions and exercises will combine to build a comprehensive picture of your individual potential as a leader.

In addition, our instructors will use their extensive experience to review your particular development issues and challenges during the designated coaching sessions. At the end of the week, you will gain a clear and confident grasp of your leadership style along with a tailored development plan to ensure you continue to grow as you lead.

Virtual course structure

Rather than an intensive five-day course, the virtual courses will be delivered over four weeks and you will be able to manage them alongside your working hours.

Week one will be a course orientation where participants can access your pre-course readings and meet fellow classmates, as well as a live welcome session hosted by our world-leading faculty.

Following that, your course will be taught over the course of three weeks with 10 contact hours each week, matching the level of contact time you would get on an on-campus course. Teaching will typically occur on weekdays during regular UK university hours. During this time, you'll have dedicated slots to meet your fellow participants, a virtual event per programme, full technical support by phone, email or live-chat and a 'virtual graduation' ceremony to end the course.

Sessions will challenge you to consider your own leadership characteristics and techniques in the context of robust analytic frameworks.

Course objectives:

  • To emphasise the critical study of leadership and its implications for global leadership
  • To introduce selected theoretical frameworks
  • To apply leadership theories to practice
  • To develop personal leadership skills and style

  • The nature of leadership and the importance of understanding how individual differences influence personal leadership style
  • How to build behavioural styles and skillsets that complement your leadership preferences
  • How to understand risk taking and ways to manage risks in organisations
  • What it means to “look like” a leader, and why it is important
  • How an engaging leadership style can increase employee performance, innovation and commitment
  • Ways in which an organisation’s culture shapes our behaviour and attitudes, and its significance for leadership and leadership effectiveness.
