Biography
GIBS Business School
Ravi Pillay was born in Durban, South Africa in 1966. He joined Nestlé South Africa in 2005 when he was appointed Sales Area Business Manager for the Food and Beverage division in the North Region that included Gauteng, Limpopo, North West Province, Namibia and Botswana. Subsequent to this role, he became Head of the Distributor Channel and mandated to increase sales to the Base of the Pyramid consumers.
In 2009 Ravi was appointed as Public Affairs Manager until his appointment as Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Director of Nestlé Southern Africa in 2010.
He has a natural passion for Creating Shared Value, inspiring collective shared action in the areas of Water, Nutrition and Rural development. Ravi appreciates the need to maximise shareholder value and at the same time to make a positive impact in the communities where Nestlé operates.
Prior to Pillay joining Nestlé, he was the Commercial Attaché for South Africa based in Bern, Switzerland. Key responsibilities of this role from 1998 to 2003 were investment and trade promotion and stakeholder relations with the Swiss government, trade organisations and European media.
Pillay also held commercial positions at Robertsons Spices (now Unilever), Ithala and Eskom.
Pillay serves on the board member of Nestlé South Africa, Foodbank South Africa and Consumer Goods and Services Ombud. He also sits on a Ministerial panel, the Strategic Water Partners Network (SWPN) chaired by the Minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation.
Pillay holds an MBA degree from the Eastern Illinois University (1995), B Paed (1987) & B Com (1990) degrees from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
