Prof. Miriam Meckel, PhD., (born July 18th, 1967) is the Editor in Chief of WirtschaftsWoche, Germany’s largest weekly business magazine, and holds a professorship for Corporate Communication at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland as a director of the Institute for Media and Communication Management (since 2005). She is also an adviser for strategic communication.

She finished studies in journalism, communication science, sinology, political science and law in Münster (Germany) and Taipei (Taiwan) as a doctor of philosophy in 1993.

1990- 2000 activities as a TV journalist and news presenter for public and commercial television stations (ARD, VOX, RTL).

1999 appointment as professor for Journalism and Communication Science at the University of Münster, Germany, and Managing Director of the Institute for Communication Science.

2001 Appointment as Under Secretary at the Department of the Premier of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia and government spokes woman, later on as State Secretary for Europe, International Affairs and Media.

Miriam Meckel is a member of the German Association for Journalism und Communication Science (DGPuK) as well as the International Communication Association (ICA). Furthermore, she is a member of the advisory board of the international Journal for Journalism “Message” and the “Journal for Policy Advice (“Zeitschrift für Politikberatung”).

As a member of the International Jury of the Development Gateway Foundation of the World Bank she has co-developed the Development Gateway Award (“Petersberg Prize”, IT for Development), which has been awarded annually.

She represents her research focus on “trust and transparency on the internet” as member of the academic advisory board of ISPRAT e.V.

2001 Miriam Meckel received the Cicero-Speaker Prize in the category of science. 2006-2007 she was the moderator of the TV-talk “Miriam Meckel – Standpunkte” (viewpoints) of the German news channel n-tv.

2002-2005 she was awardee in the “European Asian Young Leaders Forum” of the Herbert-Quandt-Foundation. For 2008 she was assigned the Eisenhower Fellowship of the USA.

She is a Faculty Associate at the “Berkman Center for Internet & Society” at Harvard University, member of the Swiss federal media commission) and visiting professor at the Singapore Management University.

Miriam Meckel is a regular contributor to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and www.bloomberg.com/opinion.

She has published numerous books and articles on the topics of Media and Communication Management, the Internet and the Media, Journalism, International Communication, Media Economics.

Her books “The joy of being unreachable” (“Das Glück der Unerreichbarkeit”) and “Letter to my life” (“Brief an mein Leben” were bestsellers in the German speaking countries. The book “Sold and Untold – communication in times of changing capital markets” (“Verkauft und nichts verraten – Kommunikation in Zeiten sich wandelnder Finanzmärkte”, together with Christian Fieseler & Christian Hoffmann) was awarded the “get abstract international book award 2009”.
