Biography

UW Professional & Continuing Education

I am an applied machine learning scientist at Microsoft working in the conversation and language understanding group as a part of Cortana in Bellevue, Washington. Before that I was in the Time Intelligence team which is a part of Outlook. I have a PhD in computer science majoring in information retrieval and web science; with a masters degree in computer vision artificial intelligence. My doctoral research is centered in the field of information retrieval and social media mining, focusing on the concept of user intention in sharing resources and its relation to information dissemination, preservation, and discovery. I enjoy learning, teaching, doing research, working on real-world problems, and developing algorithms using pattern recognition and machine learning in large-scaled datasets. At Microsoft I led the efforts of modeling language models, intent recognition, bot and skill development in Cortana, also I focused on designing, experimenting, A/B testing and building recommendation systems for time and location in Outlook calendar. In Singapore during my PhD I worked with the research group at the National University of Singapore on utilizing Natural Language Processing in understanding intent behind shared content on social media along with image intent. At Microsoft Research Cairo I worked as a research intern focusing on creating a recommendation system based on social networks. At Google GmBH in Zurich I worked on dialects detection and identification using pattern recognition and machine learning. On the other side of the spectrum, I did my masters at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in Computer vision and artificial intelligence and worked on developing the web-based PowerPoint version 15 at Microsoft Silicon Valley.
