University of Stellenbosch Business School

Eli Bitzer is Professor of higher education and director of the Centre for Higher and Adult Education in the Faculty of Education, Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He is a past president of the South African Association for Research and Development in Higher Education (SAARDHE), a consulting editor of the South African Journal of Higher Education and leader of several research projects into different aspects of higher education. He is also a rated researcher in the established researcher category of the (South African) National Research Foundation and has been a study leader and promoter to 36 master’s and doctoral students. He has examined over 60 master’s and doctoral studies for other universities. He has contributed numerous articles to scholarly journals and to academic books on higher education as a field of studies and research. His most recent books include ‘Higher Education in South Africa: A scholarly look behind the scenes’ (2009) and ‘Curriculum inquiry in South African higher education: Some scholarly affirmations and challenges’ (in 2011, edited with N Botha) and "Pushing boundaries in postgraduate supervision' (in 2014, edited with BL Frick, RM Albertyn, B Grant and F Kelly). Professor Bitzer chaired two international conferences on postgraduate supervision held at Stellenbosch over the last four years and published widely on the topic in South Africa. He is a regular presenter at both national and international conferences and has a keen interest in promoting the quality of postgraduate research and supervision.
