Thayer Leader Development Group at West Point

Carlys was born in Mesa, Arizona, and now resides at West Point, New York. She attended the United States Military Academy at West Point where she studied Environmental Engineering and American Legal Studies and graduated with her Bachelors (BS) degree and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. She earned a Masters of Science in Administration (MSA) in Human Resources from Central Michigan University, and graduated from Rutgers Law School-Newark with her Juris Doctorate (JD).

After attaining her BS degree, she served in the United States Army as a Military Intelligence and Air Defense Artillery officer. Carly is a veteran of the Global War on Terror and Operation Enduring Freedom. Since serving in the military, she has dedicated herself to extending the values of Duty, Honor, Country as a human resources professional, an attorney and in her volunteer leadership roles for various non-profits and civic organizations. While pursuing her Juris Doctorate, Carly continued to work as a Human Resources Consultant, served as an Editor on the Rutgers Law Review, and also interned at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, and in the Clerk’s Office of the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. She mediated disputes for the State of New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Consumer Affairs, and has worked at the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) as a doctrine writer and research analyst. Carlys currently manages The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point as the Director of Operations (General Manager).

Carlys enjoys volunteering, and has twice earned the U.S. Army’s Commander’s Award for Public Service for her roles in Army communities where she has lived with her family. Carlys supported and provided resources for Army families when she volunteered as a Family Readiness Group Leader for three Army units at various Army stations around the country. She volunteers for the West Point Elementary School as the President of the Parent Teacher Organization, and has coached several baseball and soccer teams for the YMCA, the Cranford Soccer Club, and for the West Point Youth Services Sports program.

She is married to her West Point classmate, Major Russell Lemler, who still serves as an active duty Army officer currently assigned as an instructor in the Behavioral Sciences and Leadership Department at West Point. Carlys and Russell have two children: Elinor and Grant, and they love to ski as a family. She likes outdoor activities year round: hiking, bike riding, kayaking, swimming, camping, and skiing. She loved being stationed in Hawaii the most, but craves the desert in Arizona where she looks forward to moving after Russell retires from the military.
