Nyenrode Business University

Bas Steins Bisschop was appointed at Nyenrode Business Universiteit in 2001. In 2007 he was also made Professor by Special Appointment of Corporate Law and Corporate Governance at the Maastricht University. He is responsible for the legal education in the Nyenrode degree programs, teaches in several of Nyenrode’s executive education programs and conducts research in a wide area of legal topics. At Maastricht University his teaching and research responsibilities are in the field of corporate governance.

 

His academic career started in 1991 with the completion of his PhD study, introducing the theory of limited enforceability of legal defenses against hostile takeovers employed by listed companies. Before being appointed at Nyenrode he has been teaching regularly at the Erasmus University and at Maastricht University. He regularly publishes in legal journals and lectures on various fora.

 

His current research focuses on corporate law specializing on national and international legal issues concerning corporate social responsibility and corporate governance. His inaugural lecture at Nyenrode in 2002, which constituted the basis for further research, provided an academic answer to the question if and to what extent corporations and their stakeholders will have to redefine their rights and obligations in legal terms as a result of CSR considerations. His inaugural lecture at Maastricht University in 2008 also constituted a basis for further research and concentrated on the issue whether or not modern corporations have to develop alternative defenses against uninvited bids and shareholders activism.

 

His professional career started in 1975. Until 2002 he has been practicing law as partner in international law firms. Since 2002 he is partner in a boutique law firm specializing in corporate law. He also practiced in Brussels and Saudi Arabia.

 

Bas studied law at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam (1974) and at New York University (1975).
