UW Professional & Continuing Education

Assaf Oron began his academic education with a degree in physics. After two years as an outdoor educator and assistant archaeologist, he returned to school and completed an M.Sc. in environmental science, followed by five years in the hi-tech industry. At that point he decided to settle down, moving to Seattle and pursuing a Ph.D. in the University of Washington statistics department.

Following his graduation in 2007, Assaf worked in health-related research. In 2017, Oron joined the Institute for Disease Modeling, a unit of the Gates Foundation, where he leads the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health program. Oron and his team collaborate with researchers and agencies around the world, attempting to help accelerate the reduction in maternal and child morbidity and mortality, in countries and populations facing the highest burden.
