The India-ASEAN Car Rally was an event mooted by the Prime Minister of India at the ASEAN-India summit in Bali, Indonesia in October 2003. The idea was to bring India closer to the Southeast Asian group. The Rally started in India, from Guwahati on 22 November 2004, made its way through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia & Singapore before ending in Batam, Indonesia, on 11 December 2004. Touring expedition of over 60 vehicles with 3 teams each from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and India; and two teams each from Lao PDR and Vietnam. Over 250 participants covering 8000 kilometres across India and 8 ASEAN countries over 20 days. Unparalleled exercise in logistics management involving over 500 officials across Country Organising Committees in India and all ASEAN countries. Extensive use of state-of-the-art GPS tracking and vehicle safety equipment. Large media contingent with full satellite connectivity and on-board telecast equipment. Parallel and allied business and cultural events all along the Rally Route to catalyse India-ASEAN trade relations and give a boost to the development of partnerships and corporate networks.
