You are in a senior management position within Healthcare (hospitals, primary care, pharmaceuticals, government, patient organsitions, devices&diagnostics etc.). You have already been introduced to the basic ideas of Value Based Healthcare and have a passion to further develop Healthcare, to meet the needs from patients, today and tomorrow.
You are willing to actively share thoughts and views with your fellow participants, in order to have a balance in the course, between theory and practical solutions, for the best possible outcome for all attendees.
About the course
Value Based Health Care (VBHC) has become an important item on the agenda for changing healthcare. Most health care professionals and managers by now are familiar with its main lines of thinking.
At the present stage health care professionals and managers seem to be particularly concerned with the challenges of implementing VBHC, not least questions about the organisation, management and information required for this implementation. Based on real case-studies from within Scandinavia this 2-module course will address a range of solutions to delivering and measuring value in health care.
After the masterclass you will be able to:
- See the different ways in which VBHC has been implemented across a number of recent cases in the Nordic countries
- Understand variations in the success of these implementations
- Understand and better analyse factors affecting the outcomes of implementation
- Better handle key relationships between different actors, e.g. between producers (pharma/devices) and providers and payers
- Assess different strategies for moving forward in VBHC
Introducing and implementing VBHC has its focus - in various combinations - on delivering value, measuring outcomes and measuring costs. To manage and organise VBHC, the following objectives and trade-offs must be addressed:
- Design of health systems and processes is essential with a challenge of changing perspective to one emphasising patient centered care while maintaining a focus on general health system objectives of allocative efficiency and equity. This implies a dilemma of ensuring effective care throughout the care cycle without sacrificing the efficiency of individual health providers.
- Organisational change and development of competencies is required. The task of coordinating patients across multiple health providers requires the development of appropriate decision structures, monitoring
- systems and communicating competencies.
- Integrative capabilities are essential in order to align the systems and processes of independent health providers. Such capabilities require the mutual adjustment of both administrative routines and the allocation of resources to ensure synchronisation without sacrificing the independence and innovative potential of the individual provider.
- Management of health information systems needs to be based on supporting the value to the patients by supporting the processes that seamlessly deliver care across providers. Cross organisational information systems place requirements on the individual health pro-viders to adjust practices without loss of efficiency.
The learning format
The learning format will be highly interactive, including key concepts presented by business school and university professors, combined with presentation of cases from managers and staff who have been directly involved in VBHC implementation across Nordic health care. Active involvement and sharing of experiences from course participants are key ingredients of the course. Between modules 1 and 2 participants prepare a short presentation on their own experiences with/reflections on VBHC. The second module of the course takes place at Tays Heart Hospital, Tampere, Finland which offers a range of experiences with VBHC.
