About the course

The goal of the program is to introduce lawyers to alternate management styles and encourage them to explore their implementation within a company. In addition, it allows participants to develop essential leadership skills to drive teams towards a shared goal in a coordinated manner and the practical impact of technology in the sector.

MODULE 1: STRATEGY AND REINVENTING THE BUSINESS MODEL

  • The importance of developing an adequate strategy: defining priorities, client focus and workload balancing.
  • The principal levers of change in the global legal services market in 2021. Reinventing the business model. Digitalization of the firm’s structures, systems and processes to implement strategy.
  • The importance of process alignment and how to achieve it.
    • Workshop: Findley Sullivan.
  • Growth and performance. Growth options, including mergers and subsequent integration. Performance alignment and how to achieve it.

MODULE 2: COLLABORATION

  • Legal upheaval. Forms of differentiation through collaboration.
  • Differentiation through creativity and transformative thinking.
  • Transition in firms from theory to practice. How to create a collaborative culture in a firm in order to adapt to new market demands.

MODULE 3: CLIENT SERVICE AND DEVELOPING TALENT

  • New business development model: How to generate more business without “selling” your service. New scenarios.
  • Calculation of fees and alternative fee structures: fixed, blended and retainer fees. Negotiation of fees and how to increase billing.
    • Workshop: pricing.
  • Strategies for improvement and innovation: Applying the Toyota principles, Lean thinking, Kata, Design Thinking and Agile methodologies.
    • Practical case study: Evaluating opportunities to improve and innovate.
  • Different generations working in a firm. How to understand and manage different attitudes regarding work practices.

MODULE 4: TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

  • Development of leadership skills to enhance teams’ capabilities and maximize their contribution to a firm.
  • Understanding the role and function of a leader as well as the process of leadership development as a path to greater knowledge and continuous improvement.
  • Training and motivation needs within a firm.
    • Workshop: The leader as a manager of change.

MODULE 5: INNOVATION

  • From art to science: Improving the capabilities of legal services. Measuring legal innovation: The innovation index.
  • Creating a client-focused learning organization. Introducing the keys to success of the Toyota program. Lean thinking, the Kata process and improvement exercises.
    • Workshop: Strategy to improve and innovate—applying the Toyota principles, Lean thinking, Kata, Design Thinking and Agile methodologies.
    • Practical case study: Evaluating opportunities to improve and innovate.
  • Demystifying artificial intelligence. Practical case study. Evaluating the current landscape of legal services.
    • Workshop: Testing our hypotheses to improve and innovate

The program include a conversation with two successful women in the legal profession: Almudena Arpon de Mendevil, partner in Gomez Acebo - Pombo, Spain and Vice President of the International Bar Association (IBA) and Lise Lotte Hjerrild, partner in Horten, Dinamark and Vice Chair of the IBA Women Interest Group.

Our Academic Director Fernando Pelaez-Pier will discuss good practices, standards and policies with them in order to accelerate real progress and to build a diverse and inclusive culture in the legal sector.
