About the course

Introduction to Agile Project Management is a 2-day course designed to give new digital project managers, experienced non-digital project managers, and project team members the essential tools they need to deliver successful projects using Agile & Scrum techniques. The course introduces students to the Scrum project life cycle, key project roles, and specific Scrum events and Artifacts such as User Stories, Acceptance Criteria, and Sprints.

This course is made up of short lectures, group discussions, team exercises, enriched through the discussion of real work application of course concepts. You will experience Agile and see the core benefits of iteration and continuous improvement. Wherever possible, we learn-by-doing.

Course Content

Agile Principles & Values: What is Agile and how does Agile differ from traditional project management techniques? Traditional project management is considered plan driven while Agile is considered value driven. These differences in philosophy can be attributed to Agile Principles and core-values. In this module you will be introduced to the core principles and values of Agile. You will learn how applying these principles gives Agile a unique focus on the customer and delivering value instead of delivering deliverables.

Scrum Events & Artifacts: How do Agile projects work and how are they managed? Using Scrum as our principle Agile methodology, this module will teach you the key events and the artifacts associated with these events. You will learn about:

  • The Sprint Backlog
  • Sprint Planning
  • The Sprint
  • The Daily Scrum
  • The Sprint Review
  • Burndown Charts
  • The Retrospective

Scrum Roles: Agile and Scrum have unique roles that differentiate them from traditional project management. These roles are critical for the success of Scrum projects and are unique to Agile, especially in their philosophy. We will review:

  • Product Owners
  • Scrum Masters
  • Team Members
  • Stakeholders

User Stories: User Stories are one way Agile documents project requirements. We will review the formal structure of user stories and we will use team exercises to explore the benefits of this approach. Before the end of this module you will be comfortable breaking down large project deliverables into bite sized user stories using this format: As a ____ , I want to ____ , so that I _____

Acceptance Criteria: How do I know if we have completed a User Story? One way Agile solves this problem is through Acceptance Criteria that focus the team on delivering value. Acceptance Criteria use a simple formula to ensure the requirements of a User Story are met. Working in teams we will work together to write Acceptance Criteria based on this template:

  • Given
  • When
  • Then

Estimating by Relative Size: Agile is focused on delivering value through continuous improvement and the reduction of waste. One way to remove waste is to remove the effort spent to estimate work. Agile estimates are typically done using Story Points and the points are used throughout the Agile lifecycle to help the team understand their Sprint capacity and to ensure they do not overcommit their resources. Working in teams you will learn a simple estimating technique that allows you to quickly estimate tasks based on their complexity when compared to their peers.

Calculating Project Velocity: How do you know how well your project is trending and if it will be delivered on time? We will round out our examination of Agile by explaining how Story Points can be used to calculate your Sprint Backlog, your Sprint, and in turn your team and project velocity.

Execute a Team Project Using Agile Events & Artifacts: Working in teams, you will have the opportunity to execute a simulated project using Scrum techniques.
