This programme is suitable for mid to senior-level managers who want to increase their innovation capabilities and inspire intrapreneurship from their teams. Your programme peers will come from a broad range of sectors and diverse nationalities to develop innovations in products, services and processes. No technical background is required.
About the course
Imperial Idea to Innovation Programme is a four-day course that guides participants towards becoming champions of innovation within their organisations. The programme delivers hands-on learning experiences that will give participants the mindset and practical tools to develop ideas into commercial business propositions. Participants will emerge with a solid understanding of how to be entrepreneurial within their organisations and inspire innovation from others.
- Immerse participants in an innovation experience through an experiential journey which includes intensive workshops

- Learn to identify new business opportunities, craft a story around the opportunity, build the right business model around the innovation, navigate the organisational context and negotiate for internal resources
Introduction to the programme and your learning journey
What to expect from the programme, what are participants will get, what is the impact of the programme.
Martin will discuss how to think about the future and how we are fooled by forecasts and predictions. He will give a big-picture overview of the key forces shaping the future, highlighting why extrapolating these forces into the future can be misleading and why we should be careful about extending trends or data forward. The session will give the participants an overview of approaches to scenario planning. Martin will also lead a session designed to stimulate discussion about alternative futures and how to take a systematic approach to identify future challenges and opportunities
Innovation and Uncertainty
Anu will give an introduction to what innovation is and why it matters. She will discuss the nature of uncertainty facing firms and the rapid pace of change which together have significant implications for firms’ innovation strategy and competitive advantage. Participants will learn about different types of innovation, the challenges they present for incumbent firms, and how firms can overcome these challenges.
Design Thinking for Innovation
Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to solving complex problems from the perspective of people who are affected by them and to identify opportunities to innovate. As such, it can be effectively used for an actor who is committed to creating positive change. During the Design Thinking module, you will learn about the main principles underpinning Design Thinking. Throughout the program, you will get the chance to apply this approach to solving challenges you are currently facing. In doing so, you will experience first-hand how this approach can help you innovate even in difficult environments.

Opportunity Shaping & Design
Competitive advantages are increasingly becoming short-lived. Firms thus need to build and develop their capabilities in identifying and shaping new business opportunities. During this session, participants will get to know key elements affecting the types of opportunities they are able to see (and not see!), and learn ways in which they can systematically design and improve their initial opportunities. They will get to know contemporary frameworks (such as the market opportunity navigator and business model canvas) that will help them to ask the right questions, and to guide them in this essential business activity.
Crafting an Innovation Narrative
Successful innovation requires capturing the attention and generating the enthusiasm of important stakeholders. In this interactive session participants will learn to craft an “innovation narrative”, and develop the skill of creating an innovation vision and communicating it.
Working in Teams
Innovation cannot be developed alone in organisations and depends crucially on the well-functioning of teams. Sankalp will conduct a discussion on some of the dysfunctions of teams and how to avoid them. In addition, the importance of first meetings and the value of a team chatter will be discussed. The participants will be encouraged to apply the learning in the project teams.
Understanding Innovations that change your industry
In this session, the participants will discuss why innovation matters particularly when it disrupts industries. Bart will engage participants in thinking about different types of innovation – technology-driven, business model-driven, and user-driven – and the challenges each type presents for firms.
Bart will present on different components of a business case, explore how to use protection strategies and complementary assets to implement the commercial strategy, and suggest questions delegates should be thinking about when illustrating a business model
Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Bart Clarysse will discuss how corporate entrepreneurship is organized at a leading company in the automotive sector, based on an in-depth case study. Topics such as business model innovation, corporate acceleration, and incubation form the basis for the discussion. The case introduces also different trajectories of business case development based upon financial planning, lean start-up methods, and imagination.

This seven-week virtual programme features 90-minute live faculty lectures with a Q&A at the end of each session. The sessions include engaging “try-it” and crowdsourcing features that help create an interactive, personalised and supportive learning experience.
