Through the How to Start a Nonprofit course with the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, you’ll learn to develop a strategic business plan, establish a budget, prepare tax and legal documentation, raise money and build your donor base, build your board of directors, develop a marketing plan and measuring success.
What you’ll Learn
This 4-week course will give you the tactical insights you need to start a nonprofit by teaching you how to:
Conduct an Environmental Scan
Strategic initial steps to conducting an environmental scan to understand needs and determine if the nonprofit is viable, along with understanding the motivation and realities of starting a nonprofit.
Develop a Strategic Plan
Identifying and defining a nonprofit’s unique characteristics and value proposition along with developing a sustainable, strategic business model and plan.
Prepare Tax and Legal Documentation
Tax and legal documentation and structure that is essential for the nonprofit. This involves filing for federal and state tax exemptions and applications, various registrations, IRS forms, and other important legal structures.
Create a Board of Directors
Establish a board of directors by determining the type of board members you need, how to find them, electing board directors and officers, and developing their duties.
