This exciting new programme delivered by the Faculty of Business and Law at UWE Bristol seeks to develop facilitation skills through the group facilitation method of action learning. Using individually-owned problems and issues from your learning set, you will develop the core skills of listening, articulation, and questioning to analyse and develop strategies for managing these challenges. In addition you will develop the vital skills of giving and receiving feedback, synthesising learning points and reflective abilities, which will be practised directly and indirectly in a safe environment through peer discussions in your action learning sets.
What will I get out of it
Through active engagement in the sessions, you will build your confidence in delivering learning through facilitation and learning through doing. The programme provides a strong basis to develop your skills and expertise as a facilitator.
The programme will run over a three month period where you will be expected to attend a mixture of taught and facilitated sessions with your learning group.
On the first day, you will be provided with a course text to help embed your learning from the programme and to refer to in your future work as a facilitator.
Day one (full day) Taught session - 9.30 - 16.30
The first day of the programme will set out the expectations of the programme and review the underpinning theory of action learning, including:
- Types of facilitative approaches
- Examples of models of research into action learning to be able to contribute to performance improvement
- Concepts of power and authority and power dynamics
- Cultural issues working with a diverse workforce
- Personal beliefs and values and their source and effect on attitudes and behaviours
- Communication theories, including verbal and non-verbal communication skills
- Behaviours to encourage social interaction, openness, honesty, and trust and their significance in ALF
- Managing yourself and your time in order to build and maintain effective networks
- Strategies and practices for building effective relationships
- Strategies and techniques for improving the effectiveness of networks
- Determining appropriate action learning styles and methods
Refreshments and lunch will be provided on this day.
Day two and three (half days) Action Learning Sets - 09.30 12.30
These sessions will emulate the style of facilitation and learning that you wish to achieve and transfer back into your own work context.
During the sessions, you will set up your own action learning sets and bring your experiences, ideas and challenges with you to discuss, work on and review as a group. You will also analyse and determine possible courses of action to take your sets forward and develop a thorough understanding of the role of a facilitator and the dynamics of action learning.
Arrival tea/coffee and mid-morning refreshments will be provided each day.
Our Executive Education Programmes are run at our dedicated Bristol Business Engagement Centre, providing a professional environment for your development needs with four fully equipped training rooms, a communications and reception area. The Centre is located at the Bristol Business School at our
Frenchay Campus with easy access to the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol Parkway rail station. To fully participate in our programme, you will need to be comfortable with using the Internet and searching for information online. Session materials are presented through a number of sources including Microsoft Word, Power Point, pdf documents and online workbooks and discussions.
