Crisis Communication - Learning From Case Studies
This course will cover the nature of crises, examination of case studies and practical exercises. Through the study of various case studies and scenario based exercises, this course will highlight the importance of communication and some practical techniques for successful operational management of a major incident.
This course aims to provide participants with an understanding of the fundamentals of crisis communications and the strategies to manage a crisis effectively.
Participants will become familiar with the communication challenges that crisis situations present and the techniques that will help them communicate effectively. They will learn to create an action plan and be able to adopt a more proactive approach to dealing with major incidents.
This course will cover the core contents through case studies, presentations and scenario based exercises.
- Principles of crisis communications
- Overview of the local media landscape
- Crisis planning – planning to communicate
- The initial crisis response
- Managing the media, including the social media
- Responding to difficult crisis situations
- Crafting effective and targeted key messages; and
- Framework to plan proactively for any eventuality
Participants will also be tested on how they effectively handle the difficult situations with the media.
It will be a highly practical course with crisis scenarios, case studies, group discussions and comprehensive hand-outs. There will also be a presentation by the civil security agency.
