About the course

The role of financial markets in driving the transformation towards a low-carbon climate resilient economy is fundamental to the efficient implementation of global ambitions in the post-Paris Agreement phase. Realising a successful transformation requires thought leaders to understand and critically analyse the key aspects of private capital engagement at various levels and from different sources. The Frankfurt School – UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance (the Centre) is a strategic cooperation between UN Environment and Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

The Centre has a long-standing track record in designing, implementing and evaluating climate and renewable energy (RE) finance projects aiming to facilitate private sector investments. One of the Centre’s primary goals is to equip thought leaders with the necessary skills to improve access to clean energy and climate finance in developing and emerging economies. With this in mind, we have the pleasure of inviting you to a complete and unique learning experience: The Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academy Programmes.

The Programme

The Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance Academy is a well-established educational course offered by the Centre. It provides participants the opportunity to learn and exchange about ambitious climate and sustainable finance

The Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance Academy is a well-established educational course offered by the Centre. It provides participants the opportunity to learn and exchange about ambitious climate and sustainable finance.

The 5-day training based in Frankfurt am Main has been designed for international public and private sector practitioners. It offers a comprehensive framework and best practices on sustainable energy financing projects in the context of international climate policy.

With two different tracks to choose from within the Climate & Sustainable Energy Academy, you have the opportunity to build a solid foundation in green finance, where you can either explore some of the bigger picture topics or go deeper into the number crunching side. Take a look at the questions below and see which profile suits you best. If you have any further questions after seeing the agendas, simply let us know.

  • Are you entering the sustainable and climate finance sector and looking forward to understand the links between science & technology, politics, and economics & finance? We recommend joining the “Climate Policy & Finance” track. No finance knowledge necessary
  • Do you enjoy crunching numbers and a solid understanding of finance and excel? Do you want to gain a greater understanding on how investment decisions are reached? Then, we recommend enrolling in the “Project finance” track. Basic understanding of finance and Excel necessary

A unique blended learning approach is applied, covering theoretical academic knowledge, applied research, and practical experience from project implementation delivered through senior educators and practitioners who share academic, technical and financial expertise.

The Art of Teaching

The Centre operates in a continuum from research to project implementation, but also as a catalyst to multiply knowledge, skills and good practice in climate and sustainable energy finance. We combine technical know-how, applied research, and academic courses to deliver first rate classroom learning. At the same time, we provide a collaborative space to formulate forward-thinking ideas for the post-Paris Agreement implementation phase, where agendas and issues are constantly changing. We build a creative learning environment around some core principles to ensure a more tangible experience for the participants:

We take you on a journey to demystify climate and RE finance, delving into case studies and learning from discussions and group work with a clear hands-on focus tailored to the needs and realities of developing, emerging and industrialized countries.

We foster a strong combination of theory and practice in the classes, ensuring interactions with experts and practitioners. Training relies not only on classroom style teaching but interaction, visualisation, application, facilitation, moderation and ongoing evaluation. A joint excursion completes the programmes and additionally caters to the creative learning environment.

To help you to think outside the box we are going to spend time in the Frankfurt School Innovation Lab to explore design thinking, learning new concepts to tackle different situations in our ever changing world.

Networking and Entertainment

Participants from previous Academies have brought a wealth of diversification and valuable and distinct experiences which adds to the overall experience. There will be many opportunities to engage, network and socialise with peers from each Summer Academy course.

Despite an ambitious agenda, we also enjoy our downtime and will help you enjoy yours. Our evening programme in Frankfurt will take you on a city tour and you will be able to enjoy traditional German food. We also invite you over for a relaxing barbeque at Frankfurt School to enjoy a German summer evening.
